A home refurbishment is a challenging project to undertake. If you’re considering it, keep a few things in mind.

  1. Who is to do it – this is the first step to home improvement. Do you want to undertake the project on your own or will you outsource it to contractors and the like? Based on your answer, move on to step 2.
  2. How much should be done – when you say refurbishment, what does it entail? Is it the entire house or a few portions of the house? Maybe the tiles need replacing or the paint job needs to be a fresh one. Once you’ve decided the scope of work, move to the next step.
  3. What is the budget – while all of us have great plans about what we want to do for our house we are sometimes restricted by the amount of money we can spend. Budget is vital and sticking to it is even more so. Think about each room and task and set aside an amount of money in your mind. Do remember that if you’re hiring people to do the work, the budget will change accordingly and go higher too. Also keep in mind that the budget should take into account the cost of materials and replacements, as may be. Work costs alone won’t mean much if you don’t take other additional spendings into account too.
  4. How much time can you spare – home refurbishment does not get completed overnight. It takes time and effort. Take your family’s schedule into account for this one. Working families, kids in school or college, the single life – everything has its own time constraints. Regardless of whether you’re doing the work on your own or calling others, you should think seriously about this. Should it be a weekend project or can people come in the morning? Obviously, the project will expand or contract depending on how much time you have to spare.
  5. What to do with the stuff in the house – if you have a lot of stuff that you don’t want to be damaged, then dust cloths alone will not do it. Paint could permeate cloth, workmen could cause accidents, even you. You may need something more reliable. Why not consider storage units if you are staying in Charlotte. Easy and effective ways to give you peace of mind, self-storage and storage units are what you should be looking at. Storage units can be rented for days or weeks. It could be a room or a locker. There are climate controlled options for expensive, delicate stuff and most storage units come equipped with alarms, security cameras and guards. Once you shift your stuff there, you can tackle your project with more confidence and assurance, knowing that your things are safe and readily available.
  6. How much should you do each day – trying to tackle every room and space and the task is akin to running around like a headless chicken – it serves no purpose. Decide priority tasks and spaces and get that work done first. Always set aside a room for your use, so your daily routine is not hindered in any way.

Enjoy your new look home!
